A quick review for a small snack. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart isn’t actually from Japan, it is a Malaysian chain started by the owners of the Secret Recipe and Beyond Veggie chains. They have outlets in lots of Malaysian malls and now also in Australia. It sells tarts with a cheese custard filling, in plain, chocolate or durian flavours at RM5.80 for one or RM29 for 6. That is very expensive considering the size – you can get a meal in canteens for less than that.
Briefly, I really didn’t like this. The pastry is quite good if a little reminiscent of shop bought empty pie cases, but the filling is sickly sweet yet has the aroma of strong salty cheese. I normally don’t mind contrasts like that, but this one had me gagging! It also feels very greasy on your lips. Fiancée likes them, though.
