Brats and Uni is a trendy cafe in the Bukit Beruang Utama area of Melaka. It’s quite a nice place with motivational posters and Ikea art on the walls, and light cover versions of pop songs on the stereo. If you want to relax over coffee, there is a sofa area, while the bulk of the place is more restaurant like to enjoy their range of breakfasts, main meals, desserts and light snacks. The signature drinks here are the ‘sinful shakes’, coffee or chocolate drinks with loads of ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate bars (plural) stuck in them.

We fancied coffee and some snacks to share, so tried to order. Unfortunately they had run out of bread to do any of their French toasts and had run out of juice (we weren’t that late, so this was a bit odd). The waiter was fairly apologetic and tried to suggest alternatives.

We ended up with a mocha and a ribena with longans. Fiancée thought they were a bit stingy with the longans, but the drink was OK. My mocha was weird – it didn’t taste unpleasant, but very malty; as if they had used Horlicks instead of chocolate. No harm done, though.

To eat, we went for a classic waffle, which was served with ice cream, a glacé cherry, and some maple syrup. Not my thing, but fiancée thought the waffle was quite light and crispy. I did tuck into the ice cream, which was standard, and not like the Inside Scoop (review to be transferred soon!) version they also stock.

In addition we had some potato wedges, which in one bowl managed to have potato which was too dry, too greasy, too soggy, too soft and too hard, without managing to hit the middle ground. The saving grace was the salted egg yolk croissant. The pastry was probably the best I have had in Malaysia (though that isn’t hard, as pastry isn’t really a strong point here), while the plentiful filling was rich and thick. I really enjoyed this.

Overall our experience was hit and miss. The total cost was a hair under RM42, which is a bit expensive, and some of the pasta dishes were over RM20 which seems high for Melaka. There are a few other places nearby so I probably won’t return here soon, but I certainly don’t rule it out. Those sinful shakes look pretty interesting.
