Sin Yoon Loong is probably the most famous coffee shop in Ipoh, though Nam Heong would argue with that. Its fame comes from ‘inventing’ Ipoh white coffee, a bitter and sweet coffee roasted in palm oil and mixed with condensed milk and sugar. It is also well known for its caramel custard, or, as we know it in the UK, creme caramel. We popped in briefly for an iced coffee, so didn’t avail ourselves of the other stalls selling noodles or pork.

It’s pretty standard inside, but the owners clearly had a very good relationship with the regulars, doing lots of teasing – and plain ordering around! They are very quick to serve you.

We had iced white coffee, which was delicious. It is more bitter than most of the same kind, but not hugely so. We also shared a custard. I really enjoyed it, as it was silky and sweet, but fiancée thought it was too eggy. I could see what she meant, but I don’t mind that.

Definitely worth popping into for a quick drink, and next time we might try to get something from the stalls. Another one for the satnav, it is in the centre of town.
