We popped into the Oval for Sunday lunch, but were disappointed to find they didn’t do a roast. However, it was still very busy, due to the jazz group performing on the day. It turns out the Oval is quite keen on music, and there are regularly bands and DJs on display. The traditional pub was packed, so we sneaked down into the attractive beer garden, where we could still hear the music and also sit and eat.
We also didn’t need to be too disappointed with the food, which was simple but quite good. Fiancée was heavily encouraged by the friendly barmaid to have the pulled pork bap, which was stuffed with braised cabbage and ‘homemade’ coleslaw. She liked it all rather a lot, except the pork which she thought was a little bland.
We shared some sweet potato fries, which were lightly battered and well cooked. Better than the ones we had at an actual Taiwanese place at Boxpark!
I went for macaroni cheese which came with a little bit of bread and butter. Very cheesy, with a hint of mustard, it was good – if hard to mess up…
I am quite keen to return to the Oval, as their veggie breakfast is meant to be the nicest in the area. It also has a good atmosphere with friendly (mostly heavily tattooed and/or pierced!) staff, and a good garden, even if the food wasn’t spectacular. A nice place.
