The Shakespeare is a station pub near Victoria; bizarrely they claim it is named after William’s father John. I suppose it could be true, but it seems unlikely as he doesn’t appear to have left Warwickshire much. Either way, it is currently run by Greene King, and is mainly a place for people to grab a drink when they miss a train.

Interior, The Shakespeare, Victoria

I have been there a few times over the years, and it’s OK, if a little able to coast due to a captive market. They had put British flags up everywhere – not sure if that was down to Wimbledon fortnight or a spontaneous outpouring of patriotism.

“Fish”, The Shakespeare, Victoria

I decided to get some food there for the first time, and went for vegetarian ‘fish’ and chips. This was three chunks of tasty halloumi in a light batter, some decent chips, a splodge of cold mushy peas, and a pot of adequate tartare sauce. An average place, overall, which I dare say I will return to.
