Justberrys is a Melaka chain of 5 or so dessert houses, selling Asian specialities such as bingsu, cendol, and shaved ice. I think they have expanded out of Melaka to KL and even Malaysian Borneo and Brunei. We visited what I think is their latest branch, opposite a friend’s shop in the Ayer Keroh area of Melaka.
It’s a trendy looking place, with distressed concrete, mesh on some surfaces, and even a couple of tables seemingly made of reclaimed cable reels, and the staff were friendly if a little slow making our order. However, I should have heeded the warning sign of the aroma of durian…
Perhaps I was sucked in by the selection of retro games, including a favourite basketball one which a friend had when I was young, but I never got to own!
We shared a couple of desserts. Mango loh is a big ball of shaved ice with mango purée around the outside and eight chunks of mango pushed into it. It’s nothing more – basically just a large snowball and minimum mango flavouring.
Did I say we shared? The other dessert was the Po-taro. This was layers going up of grass jelly, ice, and fruit jelly, topped with taro and sweet potato chunks (hence the name), plus I believe yam and sago balls. However the ice hid a secret. It was durian ice. Fiancée therefore got to have it all, though she wasn’t too keen.
This was relatively expensive, so I don’t think I’d recommend visiting, even with the friendly staff and cool games. If you do fancy it there are a few branches.
