The Purrfect Cat Cafe is one of a new breed (sorry) of cafes which aim to provide a soothing experience to help you de-stress through stroking a furry animal. I’d heard of dog cafes in Europe and Japan, and I now hear that cat cafes are popular (well, probably more trendy) there as well. This one on Penang has a cat themed gift shop on the ground floor, and the cafe upstairs. In the cafe, there is a partitioned area which had 11 cats in on the day we visited – the number varies depending on which cats are brought in, apparently.
I was a bit sceptical about the idea, but it did seem that the cats were in excellent condition, and the staff were very clear to point out welfare rules and enforce hand washing before touching the animals. I hope all establishments like this are run as well. So, if you like cats, you won’t be disappointed with this place.
On to it as a cafe – there is a minimum spend of RM18 per person, which in practice for two people means a drink each and a snack to share. All food is prepared by air ‘frying’, which seems to mean using a fan to circulate hot air with a small amount of oil. Drinks were OK, and our snack was good. Staff are pleasant, and it’s a nice place to hang out and look at cats, provided you don’t mind sitting on the floor.
Air fried potato wedges were very nice despite my scepticism over the cooking method – dare I say nicer than deep fried – and the peach and passion fruit soda drinks were fine, being simply sparkling water with Monin cordials in. All very basic, but added to the catmosphere (sorry again).
