Joo Hooi is an odd place, though the style is reasonably common here – a bit like a food court in that there are a few different stalls around the seating area and outside the cafe; you can order food from any of these and pay the stall holder. The central team serve drinks and desserts. It’s small, cramped and noisy, though this is part of the charm. Back in 2016, it closed temporarily due to a dispute with the landlord who wanted to nearly triple the rent, and the owners were thinking about moving. I’m told it was resolved to mutual tolerance rather than satisfaction!
There isn’t a huge choice for vegetarians but there are a few items. The vegetarian cup popiah – normally a soft spring roll, but here the contents served in a little pastry cup – was pretty good and cheap. Overall the considered opinion of the group was that the food was slightly below par for each dish (laksa, kuey teow, rojak, cendol).
