There are six Gravy Baby restaurants in Malaysia, and a couple due to open in the UK, apparently. They also have plans to expand into Thailand, China and Penang. We popped in to the one at Pavilion Mall for lunch.

Interior, Gravy Baby, Kuala Lumpur

It’s a British cuisine/20s theatre glamour place, if you can imagine such a thing, claiming to be famous for pies and cocktails. The main item on the menu is therefore pies, served with optional mashed potato and gravy, though they do a range of stuff like breakfast, burgers, egg dishes, meats, pizzas, sandwiches and toast.

The decor is Broadway opening night, with arrays of light bulbs and splashes of neon against an exposed (fake) brick background. It’s a good idea to pick your table so your eyes don’t scream at you too much.

I would have had a pie, except that there’s a BBR rule that says if there’s a dish on the menu with your name on, you have to have it. This served me well with Gypsy sauce on kebabs in the past, but less so with Gypsy tart which is too sugary for me. The Gypsy eggs were baked with a rich tomato and spinach sauce with cheese, and bread to dip in. I added a hash brown, because why not. A very good dish.

Man tou, Gravy Baby, Kuala Lumpur

Friends shared a side dish of fried man tou with Peking duck. The bread was crispy, soft in the middle and sweet; the duck well cooked and seasoned, served with hoi sin sauce. It was the first time they had tried this fried bread, and they were impressed.

Very bad shot of fish pie, Gravy Baby, Kuala Lumpur

One of them went for the steak and ale pie, with beef gravy; the other opted for the fish pie with parsley liquor (for non-Londoners, that’s a clear roux sauce with parsley). She wasn’t enamoured with the thin, fairly bland liquid, and the pie was just average quality. Similarly, my mate thought his gravy was too salty, and while the pie was ok, it wasn’t up to the standard of the UK.

I don’t have any notes on the cocktail we had, but I remember it was tasty, and we thought we would be happy to try more on another occasion. Circumstances meant that hasn’t happened yet, but I’d be up for it, and the next time I would aim to try the vegetarian pie.
