One of the many new restaurants at the also new Exchange Mall, this is part of a small chain of 3 Mexican-ish places, with this being their first ‘Elegante’-branded one. The decor is mostly fluorescent day of the dead stuff, similar to Mamasita in Melaka. It’s a bit dark inside in order for that to pop, but it’s nice enough. Staff were pretty good, including dealing with an issue.
We started with nachos (small and seemingly made fresh) with one sauce to start. Salsa roja was tomato chilli and coriander. Mild enough for daughter but interesting enough for all.
Elote was grilled corn on the cob (I was expecting niblets, but this was good) with a dusting of tajin powder, crushed cheetos, mild cheese, mayo, and lime. Tasty but unspectacular, though the corn was well cooked.
Estrella pizza was a mixed bag. I hadn’t come across the concept, which was a normal circular pizza cut and folded in such a way as to create 5 mini-calzones around a central pizza pentagon. This had an alleged burrata in the middle, with the calzones being pesto (daughter’s favourite), mushroom (a bit bland), 3 cheese (tasty), cream cheese and jalapeño (my favourite), and meat with nuts (wife’s). Sadly the ball in the middle was cold and rock hard. We complained, and were told it was still frozen, and they’d change it.
We later got the original pentagon back, with a replacement slightly more melted ball. It was still just mozzarella, rather than burrata, and still very firm, but at least it wasn’t cold.
So overall, the food wasn’t great (though not bad), but I will probably go back at some point. They have some interesting vegetarian options that I would like to try, and the staff were professional.
