I wasn’t very hopeful of finding a lot of vegetarian options at this dim sum shop in Bukit Beruang, but wife and her mother like it, so I was willing to take the risk. A small, family-run affair as most are, this has a fairly standard canteen style set up as well.

About half the dishes are steamed at the front, and the rest come from the kitchen at the back. Staff bring bamboo and metal trays piled high with options, and you take the dishes you want.

Meat and fish choice, Siow Kim Hin Tim Sum, Melaka

My companions chose some yong tau fu (chillies and aubergine stuffed with fish paste; they enjoyed them), stewed pork (a bit disappointing), siew mai (pork and prawn parcels, which were very smooth), fish balls (fine), and a yam ring with sticky pork (the favourite).

So what was there for me? A bit of talking – in Chinese, so sadly not by me – revealed there were a handful of choices. The first dish was carrot cake, which regular readers will know is neither carrot nor cake but cubes of radish paste fried with sauce, vegetables, bean sprouts, egg and chilli. Pretty good.

Veggie dumplings, Siow Kim Hin Tim Sum, Melaka

Vegetable dumplings were full of mushroom, and not entirely to my taste, but still ok, while custard buns were sweet and savoury, and about average.

It’s nice to find a dim sum place with a few choices for me, as it is more sociable to have food rather than just coffee; in addition the atmosphere here was lively and the staff seemed friendly (they didn’t speak any English, so I’m not completely sure!). I’d be happy to come back next time the family wants dim sum.
