The Rupert Brooke is a pub in Grantchester which has had a makeover relatively recently. It is named after the war poet who once lived in the village, and died of an infection during the First World War. We went along for Sunday lunch because we had heard it was pretty good.

Inside it is quite tidy, with lots of wood and white paint, and interesting windows, nooks and crannies. Service started patchy, with 2 out of the 3 drinks we ordered delivered being wrong, but was courteous and professional after that; they also brought a little snack for us to have while we waited. Food was good, but all but the roast was quite small for the money it cost.

I had red pepper risotto which tasted great and had delicious tomatoes in, but was very small.

The beef roast came with potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, creamed leeks, broccoli, swede and carrot. My mate rated it highly.

Afters, The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester

The cheeseboard had three small but tasty cheeses; the caramel pannacotta with honeycomb was small but rich; and the chocolate brownie had enough ice cream to make it good.
