This chain started out in Japan 30 years ago as a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, soon spreading to more than ten countries. The chain entered Malaysia in 2018, and now has a couple of branches, at Sunway Pyramid and at the refurbished food court in KLCC. We went to the latter.
It turns out that this Genki branch isn’t conveyor belt, but express train! There are three tiers of ‘rail line’, on which little trains deliver the dishes you have ordered. It’s a lot of fun, and all the kids around were delighted by it. I don’t know if it is a Covid triggered system, but you order on mobile phone from the very large menu, meaning you don’t really have much contact with staff. Possibly because they are as angry as their logo? They seemed nice enough though.
The food was a range of sushi, plus mini noodle dishes and bento. Vegetarian choice not too bad, if expectedly variations on a theme. They also have some kids’ dishes, including some squid sushi made from frankfurters… The best looking dish was a rose of salmon wrapped around rice with mayo and caviar.
The food is fine, and had a couple of interesting dishes. The cheese stuffed mochi (glutinous rice cake) was surprisingly tasty with a savoury cheese rather than the sweet blend I had feared; barbecued corn slice shaped like sashimi topping was less exciting, though I appreciated the effort; salted egg chips were sticky glazed rather than dusted in flavour.
Genki isn’t a posh place but it was enjoyable enough, and I definitely think I will pop back from time to time, even though the vegetarian choice isn’t huge. It’s one of those to keep in mind because it can suit a group as well.
