Flemington Hotel is right on the edge of Taiping lake, and that’s a real plus point for it. The location is right near a lot of the sights, and you can walk out of the front door and be by the lake in 60 seconds. The view from the rooms at the front of the hotel are pretty good, even if the lake is hidden by trees, with mountains rising to the East. Sadly the noise level is a bit high at the front, as the road is quite close.
We stayed in a premier room, the next one up from entry level ‘superior’, and it was a surprisingly big one. The bed was king size and firm, and even had a couple of firm pillows for a change. There was also a couple of chairs, a desk, tea making facilities, and a fridge (not turned on in that annoying modern manner). The TV had nine working channels, of which 4 were in English, being two sport and two film options.
The negatives were the dingy corridors which didn’t give a great impression, the dirty toilet, the general tired feeling of the furniture, and the floor level windows which were easily, and terrifyingly, openable by a baby (who tried to climb out, of course! There is a sign saying keep closed…just [expletive deleted] lock them!).
Breakfast the next morning was a rather uninspiring budget buffet – very small selections of cereal, fruit, cooked dishes and pastries, though there was an egg station too. On the other hand it was served on the rooftop, at the sky bar (5th storey), so it did have some good views. There was also a rooftop pool, though we didn’t get to use it.
Overall, there’s probably not much wrong with the Flemington that a refurbishment and some cleaning checklists couldn’t fix, and it was great to be able to walk straight out to the lake in the morning. However, I don’t think we’re likely to head back, honestly.
