I’ve actually bundled a few things together here, as to do one of them you almost have to do all the others. Linking two peaks of Langkawi’s 2nd highest mountain, Gunung Mat Cincang (spelling varies) is the Skybridge. Completed in 2005, most Malaysians who know it might describe it as the white elephant bridge, because it apparently wasn’t very popular when first opened, and then it was closed for upgrading for a few years. However it’s been open now in its modern form for 6 years and I gather is much improved.

Oriental Village, Langkawi

To get to the bridge, you first have to drive to Telok Burau, and enter the weird theme area Oriental Village. This has a bunch of restaurants, shops and tourist attractions (including a petting zoo and a selfie gallery, which we missed out on) and a hotel, around a lake. The main attraction, though is the Skycab cable car.

Cable car, Langkawi

This is both the joint steepest cable car in the world and has the sole record for a single span cable car. It takes about 15 minutes to go up, and if you like you can break your journey 2/3 of the way up to visit a viewing platform. There are several types of gondola: standard (for 6 people), VIP (with 3 leather seats), open air (bars instead of windows), and glass bottomed (for masochists).

There are different prices for all of these, plus concessions for children and senior citizens, plus express lane prices. I won’t try to cover them all here, as they’ll probably change, but a standard ticket was RM43 for Malaysians and RM88 for non-Malaysians, plus RM33 for kids at September 2021.

When you reach the top cable car station there are 2 viewing platforms, with one with a gift shop and a cafe (which does burgers and hot dogs with baked beans in, which we also gave a miss). There is also the start of the path to the Skybridge, which takes 20 minutes along a narrow flight of stairs…or the Skyglide, which is an inclined elevator and takes 2 minutes for an extra RM4 each.

Skyglide, Langkawi

The Skybridge itself is about 125m long with glass sections to look at the forest below – a long way below. I confess I am terrible with heights, so had been sweating and tensing all the way up the mountain, and then couldn’t make it more than 25% of the way across the bridge! However wife and daughter enjoyed it while I waited for them…

We then headed back up the elevator, and back down the mountain, where we got to exit via the very large gift shop. In future, I don’t think I would be hugely up for the cable car ride again, but I might check out some of the other attractions and update this.
