My wife found this place online and thought it might be nice for the little one, so we gave it a go. The entrance is next to the Kea Valley Apartment Hotel, and in fact to get to the sheep, you have to walk down the hotel car park entrance ramp beside the ticket booth. Each adult ticket is RM8, and kids over 5 pay RM5. For that you get entrance, a box of sheep food, and a voucher for RM1 off an ice cream.

There is a small gift shop and a little waiting area at the bottom of the road, and it’s here, in the shadow of an impressive abandoned building, that you get your boxes of sheep feed pellets. You then walk further down another ramp, and through gates designed to keep the sheep in their enclosure.

The enclosure is on a steep slope, with a central grassed area surrounded by concrete paths. At the bottom is a structure to house the sheep when the weather isn’t nice, including an area to partition away the rams.

There were about 12 or 13 adults and 7 or 8 lambs, I think. They are very accustomed to human contact, coming right up to you to eat the food out of your hand (or even to lick your trousers…).

I was concerned before I got there that the welfare of the sheep might have been a bit poor. While I am certainly no expert, in a previous job I took part in a few sheep farm inspections, and the ones at the Sheep Sanctuary looked in pretty good condition. While you wouldn’t keep that many sheep in that small a space in the UK or Europe, they seemed well fed, healthy, and clean, and they were able to graze a bit in addition to having feed concentrate.

It doesn’t take long to walk around the enclosure, get through all the sheep food, and stroke a few lambs, but it’s pleasant and our daughter enjoyed it, even if some of the sheep were a bit big for her!
