This place was described by my wife as a typical ‘every day restaurant’ – somewhere affordable which does acceptable but never stellar food, so it can fit into a rotation of places you eat out, but you wouldn’t go there for a celebration.

Interior, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

It does traditional Chinese seafood and other dishes, and you can select fish from the few tanks which are in the dining area. It’s a fairly standard looking place, and the staff are very nice and happy to talk you through your options.

Noodles, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

They made a spicy vegetarian noodle dish for me. This was unremarkable except for the mock pork they added, which surprised me. Nice enough.

Veg, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

Broccoli and mushrooms came in a light soy, starchy sauce. It’s the sort of dish which every Chinese restaurant does pretty well.

Pork, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

Wife’s favourite was the claypot pork with salted fish – almost like kung pao pork with its dried chilli and onion flavour, but with added savoury notes.

Tofu, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

Tofu came in a crab sauce, meaning a starchy clear gravy with plenty of strands of crab meat. Not as popular with our table.

Fish, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

The in-laws thought the ‘Hong Kong style’ steamed fish was authentic. This had light soy, garlic, spring onions, and a mild coriander. Wife said it was just ok, lacking something.

Exterior, Happy Dream Seafood, Melaka

I think I’d agree with my wife’s assessment – nothing bad about Happy Dream, but I won’t rush back. If you’re passing and want seafood, it should work for you.
