Part of the Big Three set of establishments (inexplicably stylised as Big Txree) relatively recently opened in Menara Binjai, Kopi Pot attempts to recreate one of the traditional forms of Malaysian breakfast shop, the kopitiam. Except the price.

Interior, Kopi Pot, Kuala Lumpur

The word kopitiam is a mixture of Malay and Hokkien, and the food served here is a blend of Chinese and Malay. The setting is quite nice, with retro pictures and plants, and the staff were pleasant.

Noodles, Kopi Pot, Kuala Lumpur

Wife had economy mee hoon, thin rice noodles fried with soy sauce, served with a fried egg, beansprouts, and onion sambal. She thought it was suitably evocative of her childhood.

Eggs, Kopi Pot, Kuala Lumpur

I went, as seems to be my way these days, for kaya toast and half boiled eggs. The toast was somehow hard and chewy, which wasn’t great, but the eggs were perfectly cooked, with a runny yolk and the white just on the point of congealing.

Coffee, Kopi Pot, Kuala Lumpur

Special mention for the coffee, which was very strong and full of flavour. Wife had an ordinary iced kopi, whereas I opted for the Giam Si version which was virtually identical but with a tiny bit of salt; not worth paying the extra just to have it served in a tin mug.

Exterior, Kopi Pot, Kuala Lumpur

As it is quite convenient, I’m sure I’ll end up here again, but I’ll probably moan about the price – RM32 for something that usually costs less than RM15…

Kung po mock mutton, Kopi Pot, Kuala Lumpur

Update – this has languished in my to do pile for a long time now! Kopi Pot recently brought in some new vegetarian dishes – mock chicken or mock mutton cooked in one of 4 styles (butter, sweet and sour, ginger and spring onion, and kung po; a fifth, kam heong has fish in). I tried the kung po mutton, and it was rather good. Will try the rest and update. Eventually.
