How do you open your restaurant in the morning with broken glass on the floor? Finding large shards from (hopefully!) last night under the table as we settled in wasn’t a great impression to make, but the staff quickly dealt with it. Smashed glassware didn’t really fit with the modern cafe look they’re going for. It’s fairly minimalist in style, with just a few almost photorealistic drawings of Paris on the wall.
This cafe, at the base of Pavilion Embassy (and one of four in KL), is probably best described as a fusion place, as while there are some French dishes and plenty of pastries, there are Asian and African touches, plus the oddity of ‘British curry’ on the menu. Staff generally kept out of sight, which wasn’t an issue.
We went for breakfast, so the three of us shared a couple of dishes. Wife and daughter had the Hearty Parisien’, which was their take on a full English, rather than anything authentic. I can only imagine the horror of the French when confronted with a croissant served with baked beans…it also had hash browns, chicken sausages, scrambled eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, and what I’m told was a decent rocket salad. Good overall, especially the pastry, but it was RM50 so it should have been.
I split their summer shakshuka with daughter as well. Excellent crunchy toast was let down by an under spiced and watery stew, plus a lot of the egg white wasn’t cooked. I wouldn’t have it again.
A cinnamon and cranberry pastry was warmed up before serving, which unfortunately left it rather dry. It had a decent flavour, though.
Overall, while the expensive full French breakfast went down well with the family, I don’t think there’s enough here to justify a return any time soon. I might pick up some pastries occasionally, if I’m passing.
