Kitchen Delight – or as it’s commonly known, either through misreading or the logo, Chicken Delight – is a small canteen style restaurant serving local dishes, and fried chicken with coleslaw and buns. It’s very much for locals and regulars as it’s quite a way off the beaten path.

Interior, Kitchen Delight, Melaka

It’s definitely set up for function, not style, but the staff were friendly and happy to help us split up a meal to share.

Rice, Kitchen Delight, Melaka

They made me a vegetarian fried rice, which was very basic – just egg and chilli, served with a fried egg on top. Not very exciting, but not bad. The chicken wing on the side was devoured by daughter, though she wasn’t keen on the skin.

Nasi lemak, Kitchen Delight, Melaka

Wife had nasi lemak, which came with greens, half an egg, ikan bilis (dried salted fish sometimes described as anchovies), and sambal, plus a large oddly displayed piece for fried chicken. She enjoyed it, though there wasn’t anything very special about it.

Rojak petis muar, Kitchen Delight, Melaka

Rojak petis muar was a mix of fruit and vegetables, including bean sprouts and the local water spinach, covered in a sweet soy and dried shrimp paste. Rojak buah, the fruit version is much more commonly seen, but I’m told this is nice for a change when you come across it. Another dish not pictured was rice porridge with chicken in, which the in-laws liked.

Honestly, unless you happen to get hunger pangs when you’re travelling between places and are very near, it wouldn’t be worth the effort. But if you were to, it would be fine.
